Gum disease has been linked to several systemic illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes. In fact, studies show that patients with gum disease are twice as likely to develop heart disease. The exact link is unclear, but studies suggest that bacteria enters the bloodstream through the gums, causing arteries to swell, elevating blood sugar levels, and causing secondary infections. Scientists also think the body’s inflammatory response to gum disease can trigger other inflammatory diseases like heart disease and diabetes.

Tooth sensitivity can result from a variety of factors, the most common being tooth decay. Teeth grinding, small cracks and exposed tooth roots due to gum disease may also be a factor. In some cases, tooth sensitivity can be treated with a desensitizing toothpaste, but if the problem persists, you should visit our Calgary office right away. After an exam, we can diagnose the source of your discomfort and recommend a custom solution to alleviate your discomfort.

Even if you don’t notice any problems, you should still visit the dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings. We can prevent common problems like gum disease and tooth decay from forming, and we can detect small problems not visible to the naked eye. Many times, early-stage symptoms for common conditions are so mild that patients don’t notice them on their own. By attending regular checkups and cleanings, you’re improving the chances that your teeth will last a lifetime.

At Bow Trail Dental, we offer two methods of teeth whitening. Choose from in-office whitening for fast results or take-home whitening with custom trays. We can also discuss popular alternatives to whitening, including cosmetic bonding and porcelain veneers.
