Periodontal Treatment

PeriodontalYour periodontal tissues (gums) form the foundation of your smile. Your gums help anchor your teeth in place, and healthy gums contribute to a healthy body. When gums become infected or damaged, receiving treatment is vital to your long-term oral health – as well as your overall well-being. Dr. Sean Wong can provide non-surgical treatment to rid your gums of bacteria and keep your smile intact.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is extremely common, so if you have some form of gum disease, you’re not alone. It’s a chronic infection of the gums that results when plaque and tartar stay between the teeth for long periods of time. Gum disease can cause the periodontal tissues to breakdown and it’s the number one cause of adult tooth loss. While there is no cure for advanced-stage gum disease (periodontitis), we can help you manage it with conservative therapies.

How is gum disease linked to overall health?

Gum disease has been linked to several systemic illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes. In fact, studies show that patients with gum disease are twice as likely to develop heart disease. The exact link is unclear, but studies suggest that bacteria enters the bloodstream through the gums, causing arteries to swell, elevating blood-sugar levels, and contributing to secondary infections. Scientists also think the body’s inflammatory response to gum disease can trigger other inflammatory diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Learn more here

What are my options to treat gum disease?

To treat gum disease, we can perform a deep cleaning. This involves removing plaque from below the gumline and smoothing out tooth roots to prevent bacterial attachment.Dr. Sean Wong may also place antibiotics in the periodontal pockets to battle infection. In severe cases, surgery may be required, and we can refer you to a periodontist (gum specialist) for specialized care.

You can maintain good oral health by attending regular cleanings, and brushing and flossing daily.Dr. Sean Wong and our team will partner with you to reduce your symptoms and prevent gum disease from advancing.
